Motorcyclist clocked at 205 mph on Hwy. 61

Associated Press

September 21, 2004 BIKER0922

WABASHA, Minn. -- With a State Patrol airplane overhead, a Stillwater motorcyclist hit the throttle and possibly set the informal record for the fastest speeding ticket in Minnesota history: 205 mph.

On Saturday afternoon, State Patrol pilot Al Loney was flying near Wabasha, in southeastern Minnesota on the Wisconsin border, watching two motorcyclists racing along U.S. Highway 61.

When one of the riders shot forward, Loney was ready with his stopwatch. He clicked it once when the motorcycle reached a white marker on the road and again a quarter-mile later. The watch read 4.39 seconds, which Loney calculated to be 205 mph.

``I was in total disbelief,'' Loney told the St. Paul Pioneer Press for today's editions. ``I had to double-check my watch because in 27 years I'd never seen anything move that fast.''

Several law enforcement sources told the newspaper that, although no official records are kept, it was probably the fastest ticket ever written in the state.

After about three-quarters of a mile, the biker slowed to about 100 mph and let the other cycle catch up. By then Loney had radioed ahead to another state trooper, who pulled the two over soon afterward.

The State Patrol officer arrested the faster rider, 20-year-old Stillwater resident Samuel Armstrong Tilley, for reckless driving, driving without a motorcycle license - and driving 140 miles per hour over the posted speed limit of 65 mph.

A search of speeding tickets written by state troopers, who patrol most of the state's highways, between 1990 and February 2004 shows the next fastest ticket was for 150 mph in 1994 in Lake of the Woods County.

Tilley did not return calls from the newspaper to his home Monday. A working number for him could not immediately be found by The Associated Press today.

Only a handful of exotic sports cars can reach 200 mph, but many high-performance motorcycles can top 175 mph. With minor modifications, they can hit 200 mph. Tilley was riding a Honda 1000, Loney said.

Kathy Swanson of the state Office of Traffic Safety said unless Tilley was wearing the kind of protective gear professional motorcycle racers wear, he was courting death at 200 mph.

``I'm not entirely sure what would happen if you crashed at 200 miles per hour,'' Swanson said. ``But it wouldn't be pretty, that's for sure.''

Sturgis 2004 The Good, The Bad. and The Ugly.
or what I hated and loved about the best motorcycle rally in the world.

Well we just got back from Sturgis 2004 and I got some gripes and likes to talk about.

First the good stuff, there are some great things to do and some great places to eat. The winner of the best steak house in the black hills area goes to SHOOT THE BULL in Spearfish. They have the great steaks and seafood as well as great service, reasonable prices, and if you check out our hot chick page, maybe the best looking staff, and they are local Spearfish people. There are many great food venders in Sturgis to many to list but all the food we ate downtown Sturgis was great although expensive. Then there is the bad of course, the price gougers that award for the biggest rip off goes to the Millstone also located in Spearfish. These guys have the good food, but $2.99 for a side of bacon, get real I can buy a pound of bacon for that. Another great place to eat is Sanford's, again in Spearfish. Great hamburgers, chicken and more with super prices, and very large plates full of food.

Next the best bike wash was a tie, the Downtown Casino in Spearfish and the Knuckle saloon in Sturgis were both great. Cute college girls trying to make money for school, man the Downtown Casino, and do a great wash job, while the Knuckle hires hot models to clean your bike very good job guys. You can see their photos on the hot chick page also. To the other bike washes, the key is hot girls in bikinis, not girls with bigger bellies then mine, Deadwood washes wake up, I know you can do better.

How about bike shops. Again Spearfish wins the battle hands down, BLACK HILLS CHOPPERS rock, cool bikes, great staff, and cool apparel, Earl, with awesome prices. Fast oil changes and more, Talk to Dave for information. Phone 605-717-5009. Next is bike repair and you can't beat Franks in Spearfish, fast turn around and great tech's.

THE BAD AND THE UGLY

When are the yuppies going to wake up, $60,000 and one year riding experience does not make you a biker. These guys buy these high powered choppers and other motorcycles, then rip thru the hills at 100 miles an hour. Wake up there are hair pin turns in the hills, you will die or worse yet cross the center line and kill some innocent fellow biker. Ride safe and live another day. Being a biker does not mean being an ass hole, and trying to look cool on your store brought $60,000 motorcycle. You can look just has cool doing the speed limit on that bike and people have time to take the photo or check your cool bike out. Remember the magic of the black hill is the landscape, some of the best riding in the world is there, slow down and enjoy it.

What about the traffic laws, one of my biggest bitches are not obeying them. First don't drink to much and get on that cool bike and drive, most of the crashes during rally week,  involves drinking, to much horsepower, and inexperienced riders. Wake up and live to ride another day.

2nd when there are people in the crosswalk in downtown Sturgis the law states you must yield to them, I would guess the other 49 states, Canada and the rest of the world have that same law. I see dumb asses almost hit people and have  been  nearly rundown by them myself. Hint you are not going anywhere fast when riding in Sturgis so deal with the traffic. The old school bikers (read real bikers the kind you were afraid of 20 years ago i.e. Hells Angles and other gangs) have better traffic manners then most of the new bee's.

3rd the law also states when you come to a stop sign you must come to a full stop with one foot down, then the first two bikes at the stop sign proceeds and the next two stop. See where I am going with this, you don't stop and then the whole group groups goes. I have watched this crap for years and it nearly causes crash after crash. I asked a group why they did this, they respond they did not want to lose the group, you know what you could be at that stop sign for 3 hours and the group will only be a block ahead of you, tell your group to watch for you in their mirrors and if they get ahead pull over and wait for the rest of the group. See how easy that is to figure out.

And lastly Sturgis bike week is for adults, not babies. Get a clue load noises hurt kids ears, chicks walk around half naked, people drink beer and puke, it is a bike rally not a day care. Get a sitter or grandma and grandpa to look after the kids, or wait UNTIL they grow up. (I do not hate kids by the way, just stupid parents) You don't take a stroller down main street and create more traffic, I hate tripping over the strollers and having some parent look like it is my fault because they stop and block the sidewalk.

Well I had to vent. Send us your thoughts on this topic and we will add them to the site.

Vermont motorcyclists urge helmet law repeal

Barre Montpelier Times Argus, VT - MONTPELIER - Sure, it hurts to get hit by a bug on the head when you're riding at 50 mph on your motorcycle.
That's happened to Dave Laramee. He's even hit a bird. But on Wednesday, he told lawmakers he still wouldn't wear a helmet if he didn't have to - and he thinks it's time Vermont changed its mandatory helmet law.
"I don't oppose motorcycle helmets," said Laramee, who owns Dave's Sled Shop in Irasburg. "I think it should be your choice."
Laramee and others testified on two bills that would alter Vermont's 1967 motorcycle helmet law, which now requires all riders to wear a helmet and eye protection. The bills would exempt riders 21 and over with at least one year's experience. One of the bills would also require those riders to show they had health insurance to cover at least half a million dollars in costs from one accident.
At this late date of the legislative session, there's little chance either bill will go anywhere. Nonetheless, lawmakers questioned Laramee and others closely Wednesday on the ins and outs of wearing helmets.
Many of the questions concerned the risks of a rider crashing if a large bug hit them on the head as they rode.
